What is the Difference Between HVAC and Air-Conditioning

Heating and air conditioning

Let’s start by dissecting the acronyms of HVAC and AC. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. While AC stands for air conditioning. An HVAC system can both heat and cool your home. Whereas, an AC unit strictly cools your home.

You may also run into a system that is split, meaning that the evaporator coil is inside the system in your home while the other side of the unit stays outside of your home. If you would rather have one unit it is called a packaged unit and the entire pump is housed in a metal container outside the home.

Your HVAC unit as a whole includes your furnace, air conditioning, and any ducts that are designed to release moisture from the system. Since the HVAC system is more expensive and needs more care you should spend some time researching the best HVAC technicians in your area to install and maintain the system.

Air Conditioners

Air conditions can be called Central Air or you can simply purchase a portable air conditioner to wheel around to each room of your home that it is needed. If you have limited space available in your home a window air conditioner is best.

Central air conditioner

A central air conditioner is a split system with an outdoor compression unit and an indoor coil. The compressor system pushes refrigerant fluid through the air conditioning system in order to remove the heat and excess moisture from the inside of the home. Then the hot air will reach the coil and pump heat outside. The Central Air system uses air ducts to move the warm and cool air throughout your entire home.

Window air conditioners

Window air conditioners are perfect for small rooms or apartments because they provide just enough cold air for your space. These pieces of equipment only have a small capability to supply cold air to a small area. The only downside to these systems is that they can be noisy, but they are affordable so if you are on a budget they are ideal for your space.

Portable air conditioners

Portable air conditioners are also very noisy, but they are convenient when cooling a small house or large room. These systems are portable and can be moved from room to room, but the system will need a window to release the hot air that is in the room. The hot air will enter the air conditioners ducts then move through the system to exit through the hose to get released back outside.

Overall, it is up to you and your family needs as to which system you should purchase. It is clear that the HVAC system is the best option because it includes your heating and cooling within one unit. However, the HVAC unit will be very expensive, so you may wish to purchase a Central Air system as an add-on to your home. There are significant pros and cons to each system, but we have highlighted all of the available options you could choose for your home. It would be beneficial for you to look at the variety of systems you could install in your home and weigh the cost with your budget.
